In the Atlanta area, one of the two major grocery store chains is Kroger and the only major daily newspaper is the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Kroger advertised on newspaper’s local website, AJC.com, with a major ad. Can you spot the oopsy-daisy?

If you’re not seeing it, the big problem is the word “isle.” An “isle” is an island. An “aisle” is a passage.

Of late, I’ve noticed more and more people screwing up homonyms — words that sound like one another. It’s not just the usual there, their and they’re, but really far apart words that barely qualify as homonyms — at least in my opinion — like want and won’t.

Then there’s gray and Grey. In American English, gray has always been the color between black and white while Grey is a name (that’s why I capitalize it). But no more. The bastardization — or evolution — of language in many dictionaries now allow for grey as an alternative.

I know I shouldn’t be irritated when I see a sign advertising homes for sale “in the low 200′s.” Keep in mind, an apostrophe means possession, so what does that $200,000 possess? The home builder means the houses are for sale “in the low 200s.” Just like songs are from the 1980s, not the 1980′s.

I guess all this is a judgment call. Wait, it might be a judgement call, since now adding the “e” is acceptable.
