Hotmail is a goner. Microsoft has just rolled out their new email service called Outlook.com. I’ve written several times before about the importance of  claiming your name and control your name and branding online, and this is another opportunity to do just that.

Go to Outlook.com and sign up. My recommendation is to use your preferred name that you use on your other social sites like Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.  Do it now, or someone else will be using your name and/or brand for their Outlook.com email address. Whether you are going to use this at all doesn’t matter. If you ever need to, you will have the opportunity to do so.

Consistency is a valuable tool in controlling your online presence.

Here is an example of how I use my name:

You remember how you felt when you went to customize your LinkedIn Profile URL as I recommend everyone do, and your name was already taken? Don’t let it happen this time.

There are several other reasons to create an account with Outlook.com, including social media integration platforms, and will write about those in the days ahead.

For now, go claim your name on Outlook.com and rest easier tonight.

Go claim your name!
