How Facebook is Competing with LinkedIn for Job Seekers
It’s evident that social media marketing can play an important role in your job search. In our recent post about 10 things to love about LinkedIn, a perk that tops the list for many people is the fact that LinkedIn is a business driven social media site, meaning that if you’re not a business owner or professional, you probably won’t be hanging around on this site. For those that are less comfortable with the LinkedIn platform but still want to make professional connections via social media, you’re in luck. Facebook just added a “professional skills” category to its user profiles.
The funny thing about this enhancement to the Facebook profile, however, is that it was quietly rolled out. Could this be Facebook’s way of competing directly with LinkedIn? After all, Mashable recently shared a study that 52 percent job seekers are now turning to Facebook to assist with their job hunts instead of the 38 percent that use LinkedIn.
To update your professional skills in your Facebook profile, simply click on the “About” section of your Facebook profile under the “Work and Education” category. You can then enter your professional skills. If you click on one of the professional skills that you included in your profile, you will automatically be directed to a new page that will show your Facebook friends with similar skills, friends that have expressed an interest in that particular skill, groups, and related pages. Another perk to Facebook’s addition of the professional skills category is that your profile can be tagged to make it easier for employers to find job seekers with a particular skill set.
It will be interesting to see how Facebook’s recent enhancement impacts how job seekers use the social media site. Do you think that business professionals will still primarily use LinkedIn to make important connections or do you think they will begin spreading their job search efforts to Facebook and other popular social media sites?
