Newsletter #936: The “Lessons from Black Milk” Issue
[Welcome back to the Damn, I Wish I'd Thought of That! newsletter. This is text of the great issue all of our email subscribers just received. Sign yourself up using the handy form on the right.]
Black Milk Clothing is known for their unique leggings and cult-like following of fans called Sharkies (and these girls are serious). They have dozens of fan groups on almost every continent, regular meet-ups, and even a SharkieCon — all for a small clothing shop in Australia that only sells their stuff online.
Here’s how Black Milk earns raving fans:
1. Show them how to do it
2. Bring them into the community
3. Give them recognition
4. Check it out: Black Milk Museum
Open Data: Why It’s So Damned Important
President Barack Obama is requiring new government data to be freely available and machine readable.
In an executive memorandum released today:
[Agencies must] collect or create information in a way that supports downstream information processing and dissemination activities.

Welcome to CRM Idol Season 3
We've
had quite a ride up to now. None of us ever realized that this
competition would get this important to the CRM and social markets. In
the 2 completed years, eight of the participants have been acquired,
several others gone on to a great deal of success and many others far
more visible than they had ever been before they began. Many have
ongoing relationships to the CRM community that wouldn't have been
possible without their participation.
Satisfaction and Loyalty: New Research
Today, Maritz will be announcing the results from a comprehensive study into U.S. consumer loyalty programs. The study, the first released by Maritz, aims to help explore the motivations of brand loyalty across six key industries: financial services, entertainment, retail programs, hospitality, grocery, and airlines. Thanks to early access to the findings and an interview with Scott Robinson and Bob Macdonald from Maritz, I thought I’d share interesting findings which may help organizations navigate the shifting landscape of customer satisfaction and loyalty.

"Social Business" - The Social Media Evolution
I've done a great deal of preaching about the term social business over the past couple years. Why this term is so important, and businesses need to understand it, is that it far surpasses the 101 of social media engagement. So most of you have been beaten over the head with the "don't use social media to sell", and while that is true, it's even more important for you to empower yourself with the tools at your disposal and exploit them to the fullest. This means (in my mind) that you must seek out new models of which surpass their original intent.
Content Marketing - Will It Overtake Social Media?
Recently, I was asked to speak as the keynote for the Florida Vacation Rental Managers Association. As always, I was incredibly humbled by the opportunity to spread the knowledge that I utilize on a daily basis. Additionally, it was fun to go to the conference were my primary directive was education only. I was simply there to help people improve their business.
Furthermore, I was asked to speak at preregistration educational breakout. So for that I constructed the following presentation on content marketing, as it pertains to the next step in the evolution of your blog. If you want to post any direct questions to me regarding this presentation you may do so by utilizing the Twitter tag #blogv3.
