TypewriterI read this great article, regarding Technology that Should Be Extinct but Isn’t.  The article questions the need for typewriters, fax machines, turntables, cash registers, landline phones, cb radios, and tube tv’s.  It got me thinking.  What other technology surprises you by staing aroung?

For me, it would be the VHS.  I still have more than one, as do most of my relatives.  You really can’t buy VHS tapes anymore, but you can still pick up a VHS player (although it seems it is usually attached to a DVD player).  I can’t say the last time I watched a “videotape”.  Nor the last time my kids did.  But we still have them.  They are still available.

I would also take issue with some of the technology listed in the article.  I still believe fax machines are a necessity, even though they are not used as often as they used to be.  Many times I have had to fax documents to clients, and there was really no other option.  I have moved, myself, to an on-line fax service, but still maintain the trusty old fax machine.

What technology are you surprised by?
