Choosing the Business That’s Right for You: So You Want to Start a Business

The time is right for you. It is time to begin a new business venture—time to move in a new direction. You have inspiration and energy, but there is a slight problem. You are not sure of your direction. What should your business be? Where should you start and then what path do you follow? Which opportunities should you seize and which are better left alone? I can help you with this. I can be your guide through this maze, so that you can make your right decision. Now, before we begin with that, we need to touch on something you may have already heard, but it bears repeating: You need to diversify your life. What? You need to diversify your life!

My Kingdom for Decimal Alignment on Numbers

This post isn't proposing any solutions (although I do toss out a hack). This post is a rant that I hope helps influence browser makers.

Background

Much of my web work isn't for public facing web sites. Often it's for enterprise-level software that is deployed via the web and used in a web browser. I think any web developer who does anything beyond standard brochure-ware is ultimately in the same boat. Usually we need stylistic control over elements on the page that aren't typically considered exciting.

Once again I find myself working on a reporting feature for a large piece of software. Reports are typically grids (a table) made up of columns & rows with numbers, letters, icons, colors and so on. Clients are used to seeing these reports the same way they might see them in Excel, Crystal Reports, and similar tools.

Everyone likes Pie — Word of Mouth for Small Business

Bill Kerschbaum shares a great example of the best kind of word of mouth marketing for small business — straightforward, inexpensive, and light-hearted:

Nicki Minaj Tweets That Va Va Voom

Last week an estimated 9.7 million viewers tuned in to watch the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. Although more than 20 awards were given, certain artists seemed to sweep the trophy table. Taylor Swift took home eight categories, Rihanna won four and my girl, Nicki Minaj, took home three awards. Although these artists obviously make melodious music, the Billboards are voted on primarily by the fans. So it begs the question, What do these three babes do differently to derive such a loyal fan base foundation?

I believe their active social media accounts are, in large part, what sets these celebrities on their own stage.Whether it’s Taylor Swift’s lovable cat pictures on Twitter or Rihanna’s up close and personal Instagram feed, these celebrities open up their lives to connect with fans.

Next Generation Search Analysis Software

I am very proud: With the newest release of Search Metrics Suite, we have raised the bar for search analysis software. In short, we make the value of an investment in search engine optimization important, measurable and understandable for management in a way Warren Buffett would want.
While others talk about the sense or nonsense of visibility in the search engines, we have simply worked to develop better metrics for online marketers with the next generation of search analysis software. What we’ve come out with is a new way to optimize search. Search Engine Optimization: The Search Metrics Suite now offers the ability to view the impact of rankings on your shopping carts, sales revenue and traffic plus understand your market share making SEO very tangible.

Honolulu PD Named Among Most Social Friendly Police Departments in the Nation

Social media is an invaluable tool when it comes to policing and the Honolulu Police Department has just been ranked as one of the top departments in the nation.

An independent assessment by MPHProgramsList.com ranked HPD 13 out of 50 in a  list of "Most Social Media Friendly Police Departments"

The recognition comes after a survey of 600 citizens found that 70% had a Facebook profile and said they wanted to receive updates from the Honolulu Police Department.

5 Tips for Before You Put Out “News”

If this is how you think the media will react to your release, time to rethink.

Three Things Your Employees Crave From You

Things Your Employees CraveOne of today’s most important trends in business is to utilize mobile in order to go where our customers are. We don’t tell them what medium to use. We adapt our efforts to reach out where they like to be. But what about letting your employees thrive in an environment best for them?

Woohoo, a Klout Perk for Graceland

This is a Klout Perk.

Because of my Klout influence (and the jury is out whether it’s good or bad), I have the opportunity to virtually meet the cast of Graceland!

This should be exciting.

But, it’s not.
