John Gage, the 21st employee of Sun Microsystems coined the now famous phrase:

“The Network is the Computer”

which became a prominent feature on the Sun Microsystems’ logo and motto. More than that it became part of their philosophy before the large scale adoption of the internet. They realised that the combined power of computers, interconnected, is the real computer – able to carry out more complex tasks than would otherwise be possible by the boxes we sit in front of today.

That same philosophy applies today in the world of social networking....

Creating a viral video is like “catching lighting in a bottle,” according to Aaron Strout, Managing Director of W20 Group, who shared 10 trends in social commerce at the April Social Media Club of Dallas event. University professors hear a lot of commencement speeches. But one I heard this weekend was unlike any other I've ever experienced. 

By combining the power of digital media, passion for philanthropy, and mobile technology, graduating students at Queens University of Charlotte helped the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation give away $100,000 on the spot during their commencement speech. The experiment was the brainchild of graduation speaker Eric Newton, senior adviser to the president of Knight Foundation.
