Young & Rubicam celebrated its 90th year in business by inviting people around the world to join them in a social conversation that filled a Clear Channel Spectacolor Billboard at NY’s Times Square this Thursday. The billboard was populated with their profile pictures across a mosaic based on their tweets under the hashtag #AdvertisingIs.

The mosaic was provided by Hyperactivate, a startup based in Y&R's incubator space, which has a proprietary technology that created the mosaic from the Twitter and Facebook avatars. The collaboration is just one example of how Y&R and its...

This post isn't proposing any solutions (although I do toss out a hack). This post is a rant that I hope helps influence browser makers.

Background

Much of my web work isn't for public facing web sites. Often it's for enterprise-level software that is deployed via the web and used in a web browser. I think any web developer who does anything beyond standard brochure-ware is ultimately in the same boat. Usually we need stylistic control over elements on the page that aren't typically considered exciting.

Once again I find myself working on a reporting feature for a large piece of software. Reports are typically grids (a table) made up of columns & rows with numbers, letters, icons, colors and so on. Clients are used to seeing these reports...

Note: Read more articles from my blog - Business of Recruitment

Businesses of all sizes need to have dogged focus on revenue generation and business growth. They also need to perform certain non-revenue generating activities, like recruitment. If non-revenue generating activities are not performed well, business growth can be hampered in the long run. Hence, resources available to businesses have to be judicially divided between revenue generating and non-revenue generating activities. It is a thin line. SME’s in particular struggle to manage both, because, they do not have the luxury of a plethora of resources available at their disposal. So, in their dogged quest of revenue generation and...

There are so many ways that you can take the bull by the horn and use social media to promote your eatery! But are you doing it?

I ran across this infographic yesterday, and thought this would be helpful for many local restaurants here in Salt Lake City.

If your restaurant is not currently on these platforms, I highly suggest you get started. Of course, do not just sign up for all of them and go to town leaving yourself spread too thin. Go into this with a proper strategy, choose your outlets wisely, and reap the benefits of what an awesome social media plan can do.

Social Media Education

University professors hear a lot of commencement speeches. But one I heard this weekend was unlike any other I've ever experienced.

By combining the power of digital media, passion for philanthropy, and mobile technology, graduating students at Queens University of Charlotte helped the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation give away $100,000 on the spot during their commencement speech. The experiment was the brainchild of graduation speaker Eric Newton, senior adviser to the president of Knight Foundation.

During Newton's address, the audience watched three...
