beSOCIAL 7/9/12
- Attendance/Intro
- What is going to happen?
- LinkedIn cut Twitter connection
- Twitter wants to drive people to its home site for advertising purposes
- This will make it very difficult for 3rd party apps
- Already started locking it down
- Might change the way we share news
- W3C - Federated Social Web, has open community groups, not a catchy name
- “Walled Garden” - is this a move towards paying for social media?
- Facebook cold call and email about advertising
- Offering one on one support for a minimum spending of $65 a day
- CNET article - Facebook is bad for advertising but good for branding
- Trying to get more money
- What exactly comes with one on one support?
- Facebook - Promoted posts
- Do they work?
- Some say yes - resulted in higher post views (went from 400 views to 1100 views)
- Stays there longer, more people see it
- More commenting as well
- Maybe try it out for an announcement or big sale, event or something you will benefit from if more people see it
- AT&T
- Was supposed to come to beSOCIAL to promote their 4G LTE service that just launched in Buffalo
- only on select devices
- supposed to be 10xs faster than 3G
- Nicole is getting one to try out, she will let us know how it goes
- Taste of Buffalo
- Had a Twitter wall at the event, but someone was approving them before they went up on the wall
- Social Media Day 2012
- Would be better on a weekday, higher turnout
- Raised about $400 for Computers for Children
- Bean Media - Live camera with QR code at the event
- You could scan the QR code to see yourself on the camera
- They were also editing video on site and adding it to YouTube every 20 minutes
- Facebook - Mobile App
- Haven’t figured out how to monetize the app yet
- Why not use it like promoted tweets?
- If FB added banners to mobile people would find it very annoying
- Google + - when you use it it boots your SEO
- You want people to use your app for everything, the stickiness of it matters, and FB isn’t there yet
- Starbucks is a great example of a great app
- 5 Guys app - you can order from your phone and pay, then just pick it up - no waiting in line
- Using social media for Crisis Communication
- Twitter started as an internal communication tool for a taxi dispatch system
- Red Cross National is trying to do this now, their headquarters in DC monitors Twitter and Facebook and contact in case of emergency
- CDC using this to map disease outbreaks
