There is a strong trend among job seekers to pursue search engine optimization or seo as a career option. They are mainly encouraged by the fact that the role of internet is going to increase by leaps and bounds and this will create a huge scope for online marketing. They further feel encouraged by the fact that internet service will never become obsolete; it will only get smarter and faster. So there is general assumption that in this age of internet search engine optimization offers a stable and future proof career. But there is a big question. Though seo as a job appears to be a future proof career does it have the potential to tide over period of recession? This is question is very much relevant in the context of recent recession which shook financial world upside down in 2008.

Though there is a strong sign that recession is over, the scar is so deep that every step in job seekers’ world is taken after thoroughly considering a probable economic crisis which may hit the world in few decades. After all we are recovering from a recession which was the worst in the last seventy years. So clearly seo as an employment opportunity is flanked between optimism and skepticism.

Seo companies get money from various companies which conduct online business. These companies which conduct online business try to grab the search engine user’s attention with the help of seo companies. Now at the time of recession online business is bound to be adversely affected like any other business. If online sales decrease for these companies which conduct online business, they will be reluctant to invest in seo. Naturally seo company will feel the heat.

But there is a silver line. Seo industry is borderless as it functions on cyber world. The adverse effect of recession in one part of the world can be balanced by the growth story of another part of the globe. For an example in the year 2008 and 2009 there were much less order for seo companies from European and American companies; but thus poor performance of these countries had been compensated by Asian companies which enjoyed a healthy growth compared to their European and American counterparts.
Another factor is whether you work for an seo company or you are your own boss. If you are working in a company then it is relatively tough for you to sustain your income level at the time of recession as companies will pass the heat of reduced turn over on the employees. But you are your own boss than you can easily dodge the recession by hunting for bulk orders from new market and working in innovative ways.
Good news is that it is a sunshine industry. There is huge untapped market. Newer markets are emerging on regular basis. Very often than not companies are spoilt for choices. Again this is the last field that a company thinks of reducing spending in. because seo is very much important to retain the brand value even at the time of recession if a company slashes expenses in this field unwisely it must spend heavily to create brand awareness again when recession is over.
