Review: Google+ for Business
Chris Brogan's book "Google+ For Business", is just one of many to take a crack at the new and intriguing world of Google+. Admittedly, after reading Guy Kawasaki's book, I jumped at the chance to gain even a further knowledge of the subject. After all, I am an SEO guy and I have been watching the SERP advantages of the platform since last fall. As I read the book, I liked it. I thought it was pretty good. But I really think a few key points were under emphasized. G+ is so much more than just a better version of Facebook. Chris, and many others, seem to approach Google+ much the same way as we have all approached Facebook. Create a business page, listen, engage with customers in conversation, and try to use a soft sell. On the social media front, he may very well be correct... But, what excites me most about this platform is that Google+ is fully integrated Google Search and the entire Google suite of products. What this means is the #1 search engine (Google) and the #2 search engine YouTube are now integrated with Google+. In short Social + Search = Social Search. Now when I do a search for a Sushi Restaurant, I'm going to see the restaurant my friends and trusted opinion givers like served up higher than it normally would be in my search query. Thus making it easier to make an informed decision backed by people I trust. To Chris's credit, he did touch briefly on this topic and the possible outcomes of such benefits. I really can't fault Brogan, after all, on the social media aspect of this book he was spot on. I really did love reading this book, I actually learned a lot of communication strategies from a pro like Chris Brogan. One of the things I enjoyed most was how he used real life Google+ users from all walks of life and created a daily schedule of what each one does on their respective Google+ pages. He gave me some really good ideas for implementing my Google+ strategy beyond the getting mass amounts of +1's to increase SERP rankings I was currently engaged in. I will now, with the help of some modifications to his suggested schedules, start posting and engaging on Google+.
