Social Media Book Club Review: Socialnomics by Erik Qualman
Socialnomics by Erik Qualman is a fantastic read. I loved how the book encourages you to jump around and read it how you please. I read the chapters that interested me the most first and it helped keep my attention throughout the book.
My favorite aspect of the book is that after each chapter there are chapter key points. What a brilliant idea! I have a horrible habit of forgetting the details of what I read. The key points are a great way to refresh your memory and to organize all of the information your brain has just processed.
Another reason why I really liked this book is the in-depth examples Qualman gives using real businesses and people. For example, there is a whole chapter about President Obama’s presidential campaign and how it made history with its social media efforts. I thought it was pretty neat how the whole campaign was dissected into different components of social media.
The one chapter that I did not agree with was the “Social Media Rolodex and Resources.” In this chapter Qualman lists the top social media influencers. I thought it was too opinionated. The list had many movers and shakers for social media, but I think the topic is too subjective. Also, the fact that Qualman listed Ashton Kutcher made me cringe. Just because you have more Twitter followers then the president and your own social media company doesn’t make you an influencer.
This book really helped me in my current job as the Assistant Developer at Houston Hospice. I am in charge of all of their social media and Socialnomics helped me get the blood flowing with new ideas. The book also allowed me to explain different stratigies and techniques to my boss which was very helpful. I will definitely be using this book as a reference while maintaining the social media websites at my job.
