The Future of Nonprofits – Innovate and Thrive in the Digital Age – A Review

“The only constant is change.”  Haraclitus, Greek philosopher.

I believe non-profit companies have a hard time today, straddling the fine line between giving and receiving.  It gets even harder in today’s very social economy.  So, what is a non-profit, looking to grow, supposed to do?  They need to change.

The Future of Nonprofits, by David J. Neff and Randal C. Moss outline exactly what they should do, exactly what they need to do to “take those amazing ideas and get them where they need to go.”

From showing you how your nonprofit needs to either innovate or be left on the vine, to the future of fundraising, Moss and Neff take you on a dense journey through the complete re-construction of your nonprofit and the way it is organized and functions.

But therein lies the problem.  As I began to delve into this book, I felt that I was attending a class on nonprofits, and this was the assigned reading for the course.  The book does a great job outlining what needs to be done to move your nonprofit forward, but does very little to offer any actionable items for a nonprofit to undertake immediately.  I believe those involved with nonprofit companies will not have the time to read this book, and are looking for “calls to action” that can be taken to move their fundraising success forward.

In fact, it is my belief that the steps outlined within this book are more appropriate for large nonprofits, and not the small, start-up nonprofits that you are seeing more and more of these days.

In the end, the greatest advice this book offered appears during the conclusion, where Neff and Moss acknowledge that changing any organization is a long and laborious process.  I only wish reading this book didn’t fall under that same description.
