“Socialnomics” Book Review
Most of us have been privy to the YouTube video “Socialnomics.” Whether we have seen (or shown) it during a SoMe conference session or tweeted it out to our followers; it is a simple and inspiring way to share key points and social media Stats – and make a point to a group of SoMe beginners that social media is not going away.
“Socialnomics,” by Eric Qualman, is a breathtaking overview of the impact of social media in today’s world and further details all of the key points within the popular SoMe video. Page by page, Eric lays out how social media affects the way we conduct our daily lives, from relationships to business and politics. The book is filled with illustrative case studies that range from the impact of Stride Gum’s viral “Where the Hell is Matt?” video, the story behind two popular Facebook travel apps, “Where I’ve Been” and “Cities I’ve Visited” and the effectiveness of advertising on social networks.
Prior to reading the book, we had heard that it is not necessarily a book to learn social media “how to’s” but rather a read that will cause inspiration and help to re-energize the efforts that you have hopefully already begun – that was very much the case. It is the type of book that can be picked up time and time again and referenced. One of the coolest parts of the book is the “Social Media Rolodex” that is makes up Chapter 9 – where you can find a listing of various social media thought leaders and resources.
This book is a must-read if you’re looking to get a better grasp of social media and its direct impact on you or your company. We highly recommend it!
