Words and concepts go in and out of fashion, and neither “sales” nor “marketing” are terribly popular right now. Introduce yourself at a networking event with, “I’m in sales” and watch new acquaintances and potential clients tastefully back away.
Ryan Sauers wants to replace “sales” with “communications.” Of course you wouldn’t say, “I’m in communications,” but thinking of sales as communications (yes, plural) is a good start.
“Typical ‘sales’ is seen as pushy, aggressive, gimmicky, with name repetition, body mirroring and the power handshake,” he says. “We’ve all experienced those people. Don’t do it.”
