Gail Ahlers and I are psyched about planning our first meetings! We've reached out to the RI community, and are delighted to see how much interest there is in our chapter.
We're looking forward to sharing and collaborating with the abundant talent in Rhode Island.
We wanted to share some exciting results from our 2011 census involving Social Media Club Providence, where innovators from Rhode Island meet for monthly events to share, engage and collaborate with the community on the issues of social media and technology. Our Facebook page has grown to 124 members and our Twitter feed, to 212 members. For more information, please visit our Facebook page or Twitter feed and join us for an upcoming event!
On Tuesday, May 3, Dr. Richard Lobban joined Social Media Club Providence at Candita Clayton Studio to speak about Egypt's Social Media Revolution. Dr. Lobban is an expert in African studies and was on the ground during the Egyptian uprising leading a tour group. In order to set the stage, Dr. Lobban gave a thorough overview of the societal factors that led to the Egyptian uprising, including government grievances and severe unemployment issues. Then, Dr. Lobban shared how social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, gave the people of Egypt a voice they had never had before. Using powerful images and first-hand accounts, Dr. Lobban was able to bring the revolution to life for the meet-ups attendees.
