Recap of Egypt's Social Media Revolution

On Tuesday, May 3, Dr. Richard Lobban joined Social Media Club Providence at Candita Clayton Studio to speak about Egypt's Social Media Revolution. Dr. Lobban is an expert in African studies and was on the ground during the Egyptian uprising leading a tour group. In order to set the stage, Dr. Lobban gave a thorough overview of the societal factors that led to the Egyptian uprising, including government grievances and severe unemployment issues. Then, Dr. Lobban shared how social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, gave the people of Egypt a voice they had never had before. Using powerful images and first-hand accounts, Dr. Lobban was able to bring the revolution to life for the meet-ups attendees.
Social Media Club Providence Chapter Update
It's been a busy couple of months for the Social Media Club Providence chapter. We had an extremely successful launch event on February 24 at Aspire with over 30 attendees. One of our favorite local bloggers, @iheartrhody, gave a great recap of the event complete with some of the photos she captured on her blog. There was tweeting, chatting, iPhone photography sessions and a ton of excitement about the chapter. Attendees said they would be interested in educational events, as well as panels of local experts working in the social media field.

We covered a ton of stuff and are ready to divide and conquer to create a spectacular launch event that will bring Providence's best tweeters, Facebook junkies, FourSquare rockstars, and blogging fiends together in one room!
