Calling all students, educators, administrators and highered guru's! Join us tomorrow for our weekly SMEDU Twitter chat at Noon and 9 PM ET. Following the hashtag #SMEDU as we take a look at student vs. educator privacy.
This topic always seems to have a lot of action, since opinions are constantly changing for inside and outside of classroom social media use.
Just recently the state of Missouri passed a law banning educators from "friending" a student on Facebook, only to have it overturned just a few days ago. So, this week as we all head back to campus we're going to ask, are you Facebook friends with your students? Students, are you hoping to connect with your professors using social media this semester? What does this mean?
The new academic year is quickly upon us. Over the next several weeks, educational organizations across the US and much of the world will begin their sessions for the coming year. It is a natural time to ask the following questions:
What is new and how might/will it be used?
What was used before that will be used again (and how)?
What new ways will we use what is already there?
What do we need to make better use of social media in our various roles in education?
This will be the topic of our #SMEDU chats on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Noon and 9 PM ET. Join us on Twitter at #SMEDU as we take a look at the year ahead.
“Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” Victor Hugo
Such has been the case with social media. In less than a decade, social media has come to impact the planet’s population, businesses, groups and governments: how we work, learn, lead and live. It is not surprising that the industry’s trade association, The Social Media Club (SMC), has grown to over 200 chapters and 300,000 members in the past five years. Nor is it surprising that relationships between the industry and higher education would develop to foster professional development paths, programs and degrees. Two years ago, SMC launched the SMC EDU initiative (also know as the SMC Education Connection) to develop this relationship.
