UNH's SHARPP Gets Social
The Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Program (SHARPP) provides support, advocacy, information, and prevention education on the issues of relationship violence, sexual violence, and stalking to the University of New Hampshire Durham campus.
Since its creation in 1988, violence is still an issue at UNH but the way SHARPP engages students has shifted dramatically. Students are no longer wanting to visit the department during office hours or meet in the student center for traditional in-person education. To meet the needs of students, SHARPP has changed its whole approach to outreach and now seeks to get social with the UNH community and meet students where they are… online. Dawn D. Zitney was hired as the first media outreach coordinator for SHARPP, also the first department at UNH and the first college campus crisis center in the country to hire a staff member whose main job function is to use social media and emerging technology to outreach to students. Through Facebook and Twitter, SHARPP is educating the community and sparking dialogue about violence prevention. Using YouTube they're working with students to create multimedia snippets on how they define and get sexual consent. With chat rooms, SHARPP is also expanding the ways they provide direct services to survivors of violence and those who care about them... and this is just the beginning.
