Social media has impacted the journalism profession in profound ways. It has enabled the rise of citizen journalism while simultaneously opening incredible opportunities for journalists to connect with their audience and to source stories. From communities like Reddit coming together to produce real-time reporting of catastrophic events to recent reports that show social media is increasingly becoming the top news source for consumers, social media has radically changed how stories are consumed and reported.
What does this all mean for journalists and PR professionals? Presented by Social Media Club Sacramento and Public Relations Society of America, California Capital Chapter, a panel of Sacramento journalists and reporters will share insights into how they leverage social media and what’s next for journalism in this digital age.

BIOS:
Jen Picard's love affair with radio began while she was a student at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA. Her weekly show on the student-run station, KRFH, led to an internship in 1999 at KUBA in Yuba City. There she served as the weekend and afternoon news anchor. After graduating in 2000 with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications, Picard was hired as a features copy editor at the Appeal-Democrat newspaper in Marysville, CA.
In 2001, Picard was promoted to Entertainment Editor, a position she held for five years. During her time in print, she wrote a weekly pop culture column and spent an inordinate amount of time covering local concerts and plays. "It was a rough job, but someone had to do it," she said.
Picard left the paper in March 2006 to pursue a freelance writing career, but found herself called back to radio in July 2006. "Working from home gave me an opportunity to listen to Insight daily and I really enjoyed the in-depth analysis of local topics, not to mention the variety," she said. "I wanted to work here and I got lucky. It's great to be a part of something that's unlike anything else in the area."
Picard lives in Sacramento with her photojournalist husband Max Whittaker and her neurotic cat Smokey. An admitted television addict, she spends an excessive amount of time discussing the merits of "American Idol" and "Glee" with anyone who will listen. When in need of fresh air, she can be found riding her bike on the American River Parkway.
Judy Farah, News Director and Senior Editor, KFBK
KFBK News Director and Senior Editor Judy Farah has more than 25 years news experience in New York, Los Angeles and Sacramento. She's edited the KFBK Afternoon News with Kitty O'Neal the past 13 years while also directing the newsroom by assigning stories and scheduling interviews. Farah started out as a newspaper reporter, then covered major stories as a reporter for The Associated Press in Los Angeles, including the 1984 Olympics, the Oscars, Emmys, the presidency of Ronald Reagan and the criminals trials of the Night Stalker and the Hillside Stranglers.
Farah came to KFBK in 1996, and has helped direct coverage of four presidential elections, five governor's elections and the killing sprees of Yosemite Killer Cary Stayner and Scott Peterson. She also broadcast live for two 13-hour days for KFBK from the 9-11 terrorist attacks. A graduate of William Paterson College in New Jersey, Farah has won three Edward R. Murrow awards, including one for best writing, while at KFBK. She's also earned two awards from the Northern California Radio Television News Directors Association for Best Series and Best Newscast. She has also written for the Wall Street Journal, TV Guide, Los Angeles and Parents magazines. She was honored with a Jefferson Fellowship in 2009 and traveled to Japan, China and Hong Kong to study the Asian economy. In 2010, she was awarded a RTNDA RIAS Fellowship to travel to Germany, Belgium and Prague to study the European economy.
In her free time, Farah enjoys the outdoors by hiking along the American River bike trail and kayaking. A wine enthusiast, Farah's done a monthly wine segment on KFBK the past three years and enjoys visiting our local foothill wineries.
Kelly Johnson, Reporter and Social Media Strategist, Sacramento Business Journal
Kelly Johnson has been a reporter at the Sacramento Business Journal for more than 15 years and also serves as the Business Journal’s social media strategist. Her beats include retail, sports, insurance, media and marketing.
Kelly caught the social media bug four years ago when she started covering social media, and she has no desire for a cure. In the spring, she was one of 25 journalists selected from around the world for the weeklong Kiplinger social media fellowship at Ohio State University.
Before coming to the Business Journal, Kelly was a reporter for the daily newspaper in Humboldt County and for the Neighbors section of The Sacramento Bee.
She earned a degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Sabrina Rodriguez, Reporter, Fox40
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sabrina grew up watching some of the best local news in country and knew she wanted to be a journalist when she got older.
After graduating from Cal State East Bay, Sabrina spent a year and a half in Coos Bay, OR as an anchor/reporter at KCBY. From there Sabrina decided to switch coasts and moved to Springfield, MA where she spent two years (and three New England winters) as an anchor/reporter for WGGB. During her time in Springfield, Sabrina earned an Associated Press Award for an undercover story she did about school security.
As much as she loved the East Coast, Sabrina missed her home state and was lucky enough to find a job in Bakersfield as an anchor/reporter at KBAK/KBFX ¿ Eyewitness News. In the two years she spent in Bakersfield, Sabrina grew as a journalist and not only won an Edward R. Murrow Award, but also two Emmys for her weekend newscasts. After that, Sabrina had the good fortune to stay in California and moved about 400 miles north to Fox40 in Sacramento where she works as a multi-media journalist/fill-in anchor.
Matt Weiser, Senior Writer, The Sacramento Bee
Matt Weiser has covered environment and government issues as a newspaper journalist in California for more than 20 years. He currently covers water and natural resource issues at The Sacramento Bee, where he has worked since 2006.
