Just 5 years ago today, Twitter launched to public

Twitter has brought microblogging to the mainstream, and to think it was only launched 5 years ago.

July 15, 2006 was when Twitter opened to the public. Remember all those funny looks the early adopters were given, when they talked about ‘tweets’ and their ‘tweeps.’

Fast forward 5 years, this free microblogging service is mainstream with every major celebrity, brand and news outlet using it to extend their voice and connect with fans.

Twitter has more than 200 millions users worldwide and has help unite communities who rally around social good causes, political issues, news, hobbies and more.

The way we communicate today, has been transformed by Twitter and other social media tools.

Back in 2006, Founders of Social Media Club, Chris Heuer and Kristie Wells, saw the impact social media was beginning to have on media so they launched the first chapter of SMC in San Francisco, California on August 16, 2006.  We’ve sustained massive (not 200 million users massive, but massive for us) growth ourselves in the last 5 years, to now more than 300,000 members across 300+ chapters in 47 countries.

We’ll be sharing more stories from when Social Media Club first launched over the next few weeks and look forward to hearing how the advancements in social media tools have helped you connect with others across the globe.
