What's Hot in Blogging: April 2011

The first Wednesday of every month, contributor Amy Phillips will recap what made waves in blogging for the previous month.

This month was the month to for mommy blogs to talk about extreme couponing. Yes, you read that right- extreme couponing. It seems that our recession has spawned a hobby (obsession?) where people try to get as much food as possible for as little money as possible. All of this is highlighted in the TLC reality show called…you guessed it….Extreme Couponing. While it’s great to get items as cheap as possible, some question the kinds of food being bought and whether the purchases make good sense. However, if you are interested in reading about these shoppers you can follow one of the ladies featured on the show. Here is blog is here.

But the buzz in April was all about Kate and William. Love it or hate it, the royal wedding was inescapable. News outlets, twitter, Facebook….everyone was talking about it. However, the amount of people watching and talking about it was unprecedented, and a wrap-up for April wouldn’t be complete without at least a mention. So to keep it short, here is a list of the best wedding tweets.

And we couldn’t mention the wedding without mentioning the meme that has erupted from the the now famous pitcure. First, the picture (if you happen to be the one person on the planet who hasn’t seen it);

That little girl that has clearly has enough? That’s Grace Van Custem and a quick search for ‘flower girl meme’ will garner posts like this one. The internet approves.

On the gaming side, the much awaited release Portal 2 came out. There’s a whole tumblr blog dedicated to just this game. My son is a gamer, and he would be upset if I didn’t at least mention this important (to him, anyway) event. A group that holds their official symbol CTRL+C and CTRL+V as sacred? Sign me up.

In Sweden the file-sharers continue their fight against DRM. If you said this was a fight of good vs evil, then the File-Sharers agree with you. They have filed to have their religion, the Missionary Church of Kopimism recognized by the government of Sweden.

The fall out from the global meltdown that started in 2008 is not yet finished. Iceland, one of the hardest hit countries, took an unprecendted step this month when they declared their independance from interntaional banks. Iceland has essentially told the world “Our taxpayers are not repsonsbile for gross negligence of bankers.” This will mean that Iceland will not be admitted to the European Union, to which the voters of Iceland said (and I’m paraphrasing here) “Pound Sand” by defeating a referendum on the EU question. This blog is chronicling the events as they unfold.

In a story that started with the Eypt protest Lara Logan broke her silence on her harrowing attack in the square. She is incredibly brave and by speaking up, gives voice to millions of victims the world round.

One of the most shared clip this month shows off the skills of David Beckham;

And this hilarious spoof of the royal wedding was a big hit as well;

But our favorite was was an event that takes place in my area of the country, the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. This is an annual party where journalists who cover the White House get together to make fun of themselves and the rest of the politico’s. Watch Seth Meyer’s hilarious bit here;

Until next month!
