What are the three key steps social media pros should take when navigating crisis?

At the end of February 2020, Jen Hartmann’s predecessor and mentor at John Deere retired after two decades and Jen assumed the role of director, strategic public relations beginning March 1, nearing the peak of the global pandemic, COVID-19.

As Jen says, she gained 20 years of experience in 3 months, managing a team as well as public relations and social media efforts for an enterprise brand.

Join Social Media Club and Jen Hartmann to hear about Jen’s first 3 months as the director of PR and overseeing PR/social media during COVID-19 as well as the civil unrest following the tragic death of George Floyd.

Jen is responsible for protecting and improving John Deere’s reputation by leading an enterprise social media and public relations strategy for Deere. This includes oversight of all external channels including earned media, social media, John Deere Journal, corporate communications on and executive social media platforms.

Jen has over 25 years of experience in public relations, communications, and marketing. 11 of those years have been with John Deere. Her roles at Deere have included serving as the Public Relations Specialist and Communications Manager at Harvester Works; serving as a Marketing Communications Manager for compact construction equipment; and most recently serving as the Social Media Manager for the enterprise.

Jen is a passionate autism advocate and the co-founder of Royal Ball Run for Autism which raises funds and greater acceptance and awareness for children and young people with autism in the Quad Cities area. She and her husband Pat (a facilities engineer for Deere) have two children: Lyric (18) and Kade (6). Jen also has a stepson, Logan, from a previous marriage.

Most Memorable Moment During Quarantine: “At the peak of the crisis, I was working 16-hour days. Pat was working at the factory. Not my proudest parenting days, but my kids were lucky if I threw a few Pop-Tarts their way. One day, while I was on one of many phone calls, I impatiently gave my 6-year-old the password to my Apple ID so he could download a pirate game onto his iPad. He downloaded it. Then proceeded to purchase $1200 worth of “treasure chests” for the game. We can laugh about it now…”

The Hashie Awards were established in 2014 by Social Media Club Des Moines, a member chapter of Social Media Club, Inc., to recognize and celebrate excellence in social media marketing. The seventh annual Hashie Awards ceremony is set to be hosted on Thursday, August 20, 2020 at Jasper Winery. Due to COVID-19, tickets will go on sale for the ceremony at a later date.

Entry period for 2020 Hashie Awards submissions opens Monday, April 20. Early bird pricing expires on Friday, May 1 at 11:59pm.
